Supervisors pick name for soccer complex

Council will make its choice Feb. 12

If the Warren County Board of Supervisors has its way, the proposed soccer complex at the Avtex Superfund site will be named the Skyline Soccer Plex.

But, the supervisors unanimous decision Tuesday morning to accept that name over four others must match the same decision the Front Royal Town Council will make on Feb. 12.

An ad-hoc committee created to make recommendations from names submitted during a recent contest chose five finalists out of more than 50 contestants on Jan. 24.

Supervisor B. K. "Bret" Haynes Jr. make the request to name the park the Skyline Soccer Plex, and after a short discussion the board approved the motion.

"I for one like the ring of the Skyline Soccer Plex," Haynes said.

The following are the five finalist names for the soccer complex that the supervisors picked from, and that the town council will also select from on Feb.12:

    • Riverview Soccer Complex
    • Mountain View Soccer Complex
    • Twin Rivers Soccer Complex
    • Skyline Soccer Plex
    • Front Royal Soccer Plex

The winner will be awarded a plaque, have their picture taken by local newspapers and will be able to choose three of the business-sponsored prizes offered as part of the contest.

Parks and Recreation Director Daniel P. Lenz said it was also recommended that one of the complex soccer fields or the large playground be named after Ed Stump and that either the business park or conservancy park be named in honor of U.S. Rep. Frank W. Wolf or Sheriff Lynn C. Armentrout for their efforts in the process.
