Members of the board governing the state Department of Waste Management and members of the department staff toured the idle Avtex Fibers plant in Front Royal on Tuesday, a department spokesman said.

Stuart Ridout said the board periodically visits Environmental Protection Agency Superfund sites in the state.

Members were in Springfield on Tuesday for a meeting and a two-hour tour of the plant was scheduled as part of their itinerary.

The tour was designed to introduce them and staff members to the site, Ridout said.

Six members of the board, J. Allen Ball Sr., Albert Balko, James Craig, Constance M. Hill, Joan McCallum and Michael Wall, visited the plant. They were joined by Department Director William Woodfin and other staff members.

Woodfin is a former official with the State Water Control Board who visited the site just after it was closed in November 1989
